The Historian Project Thehistorianproject

This project is a history lesson to those who aren't well informed in the Lore of Guildwars,
haven't played the first game, or are just generally interested in the stories of Tyria.
I compiled the general history of Guild Wars here, these stories come from playing through the game it's self,
the books, and the manuscripts.

Chapters:
I) Tyria
II) Cantha
III) Elona
IV) Aftermath

Chapter I - Tyria

10,000 BE (Before Exodus)
The Great giants known as the Giganticus Lupicus dissapear from the Tyria completely, leaving behind nothing but old bones. It is rumoured that they were wiped out by the elder dragons, but no solid evidence is given.
1769 BE
The Forgotten arrive in Tyria. These snake-like creatures were summoned by the gods to be the world's custodians, they took care of the creatures of Tyria while the gods built the world around them.
786 BE
Humans appear in Cantha.
205 BE
Humans appear on the Tyrian continent and Elona.
100 BE
Humans take Ascalon from the Charr! and Doric is crowned the first King of Ascalon.
1 BE
The Human gods give magic to the races of Tyria,

0 AE (After Exodus)
Magic corrupted and killed many, Doric sought help from the gods.
Despite the Forgotten leaving the world of Tyria, the Gods did not falter in the development of the world. One of the Gods, Abaddon, introduced the most influential creation in all of Tyria: magic. Its purpose was to make the lives of all intellectual races easier, but it soon became used as weapons and caused inter-racial wars throughout the world.
By the year 1 BE, when magic was given, Humans occupied lands throughout the world and most of the continent of Tyria. Unlike modern times with individual countries, all the Humans of Tyria were ruled by the original noble ruler of all lands, King Doric. It was he who traveled from Ascalon to Arah and pleaded before Dwayna, Balthazar, and Melandru with the hope of having the gift-turned-curse removed and the bloodshed stopped. The Gods agreed and created the bloodstones which were separated into five pieces. Four of the stones were linked to the four schools of magic – Preservation, Aggression, Destruction, and Denial – the fifth becoming the keystone required to connect them, ultimately sealed using King Doric’s own blood. The bloodstones prevent any one individual from harnessing all four schools of magic. Finally, the five stones were placed in the volcano known as Abaddon's Mouth – the largest volcano on the Ring of Fire Island Chain.
However, the creation of the bloodstones did not go unhindered, for Abaddon, the God who gave out magic too freely, disagreed with limiting the gift and as such rebelled against the other Gods. His rebellion cost him greatly though, for while he was able to defeat two Gods at once, he was no match for all five Gods, and for his rebellion Abaddon was imprisoned within the Realm of Torment. The blow that defeated Abaddon was so powerful that it weakened the barrier between Tyria and Abaddon's realm and caused the creation of the Desolation and Crystal Desert. Shortly after Abaddon's imprisonment and the bloodstones' creation, the Gods left Tyria forever, no longer walking with man, but not forgetting Tyria for they still watch over the world.
This event would become known as the Exodus of the Gods and later mark the year 0 for the commonly used Mouvelian calendar (AKA: Tyrian calender). For a time, all was good and the world was finally at peace once again. Peace, however, can always come to an end: the Humans prospered over the next hundred years until Abaddon's Mouth erupted, scattering the five bloodstones across Tyria. Though the bloodstones have never been reunited, their magic seeped into the land and air and greed sprouted once again in the hearts of man, giving rise to new wars, this time amongst the humans themselves

Ascalon's Great Northern wall comes up.

1013 AE
The Guild Wars begin! (yes indeed, the game is named after this set of events)
The Guild Wars are the series of at least three wars among different guilds in the three human kingdoms of Ascalon, Kryta, and Orr. The wars ended only because the charr invasion from the north meant an even bigger threat to the three kingdoms.
The second Guild War was memorialized by the construction of Surmia in 1020 AE. Ascalon was the kingdom victorious of this war according to the Historical Monument of Surmia. It is unlikely that the war ended during 1020 AE, however, due to the length of the latest Guild War.
The most recent Guild War lasted for 57 years (from 1013 AE until 1070 AE). The war caused much suffering and hatred between the people of the three kingdoms. During this war, King Adelbern was a war hero which led to his eventual crowning as a king instead of Barradin (a prince of royal blood) becoming king.
While there have been many Guild Wars prior to this one, when characters in the game refer to the Guild War, they mean the last one which ended with the Searing. While initially confined to a conflict between guilds, when open combat erupted in the streets of Arah, Orr responded to protect its holy city. The military action against Krytan and Ascalonian guilds spurred the other nations into responding, leading to open conflict between the three nations.

1070 AE
(this is when Guild Wars prophecies actually begins)
The Charr decide to attack the now battered human nations, thus ending the Guild Wars, they begin with the Searing of Ascalon.
Following the defeat of Vatlaaw Doomtooth at the hands of Prince Rurik, the Charr called forth a destructive power that became known as the Searing. Using the Cauldron of Cataclysm and the power of their Titan gods, the Charr shaman Bonfaaz Burntfur summoned forth a devastating magic that rained down burning crystals on Ascalon. The regions impacted by the Searing ranged from lands far north of The Great Northern Wall to the Blazeridge Mountains. However, the Searing was arguably most devastating to Ascalon City, Rin, and Surmia. Ironically the most intact structure following the Searing was The Great Northern Wall. Parts of the Shiverpeak Mountains were likewise affected by the cataclysmic change in climate, causing areas that had at one point enjoyed frequent snowfall to turn barren.
The Searing was devastating to both the human kingdom of Ascalon and the land itself. Upheavals and craters reshaped the landscape while fires burnt away the lush forests and fields, leaving barren rock and ash-clogged fields. Water vanished from the rivers and lakes, some being replaced with tar, and without the plantlife to sustain them, all but the hardiest animals died out. Cities were reduced to ruins and villages were all but eradicated.
Once the embers settled, the Charr were able to overcome the Great Northern Wall and march through Ascalon to Orr. The ramifications of The Searing and the following invasion forever changed the position of humans as the dominant race on the continent of Tyria as it opened the way for the Charr to march to Arah (Orr).
The Searing broke the once proud kingdom of Ascalon, leaving it an empty husk of its former self and close to collapse. The armies of the Charr proudly marched through Ascalon territory believing that what resistance remained would be easily overcome. Yet those that remained would not yield to the invaders from the north. Even eight years after the Searing, Ascalon's lands south of the Wall still held out against the Charr.
Kryta however suffered a different fate, when the charr reached it after Ascalon they were held of by a the newly formed White Mantle and their Unseen Gods, the White Mantle hereby also took over the Krytan government.

1071 AE
The Charr reach Orr.
The Orrian military had been tested in the battles of the Guild Wars, and the inhabitants of the city-state were confident they could defend themselves against the charr.
They had no idea what would befall them.
The charr forces overwhelmed the defenders and marched to the holy city of Arah, where the gods had once walked Tyria. The Orrians scattered and died before the legions. But Orr was an old land, a powerful land—and a land of secrets. The king's personal advisor, a man versed in the mystical arts, crept into a warded vault deep in the catacombs of Arah. There, he unrolled the Lost Scrolls and uttered a spell that would be the doom of all in Orr.
An enormous explosion rocked the continent, and the lands of Orr shuddered and collapsed. Arah, and all the country around it, began to sink. Where there was once a countryside of invading armies, scattered villages, and fertile woodlands, there was now only an expanse of sea and water.
Few humans or charr lived through the event. It was known as the Cataclysm.

1072 AE
Ascalonian Refugees Flee to Kryta
With no hope of relief from Orr, Prince Rurik (Adelbern's Son) looked to Kryta. However, the journey from Ascalon to Kryta was a difficult and dangerous crossing, with the foreboding Shiverpeak Mountains between them. Rurik, now an outcast, was joined by a number of supporters; he resolved to lead them over the mountains, where they could find sanctuary.
As the group traversed the mountains, they found themselves caught in another conflict. The Shiverpeaks were the domain of the dwarves, and they themselves were embroiled in a civil war. The Deldrimor dwarves were friendly to the refugees, but the opposing faction, the dwarves of the Stone Summit, believed in the innate superiority of dwarves over all other races. The Stone Summit made it a mission to destroy the Ascalonians as they moved through the harsh Shiverpeaks. It was only through the actions of Prince Rurik and his most trusted allies that the refugees were able to survive. It was not without cost; Rurik sacrificed himself at the Frost Gate, and the Ascalonians were left to face their future without the bravery of their prince.
The Group led the Ascalonians to safety, setting up camp in Kryta, but the group went on to help stomp out some rebels known as the shining blade, tricked into believing they were cruel murderers. Later they discovered the current canthan military The White Mantle were infact the ones murdering, and those so called rebels were attempted to bring power back to the royal-blood line of Kryta.
The group went on to become Ascended and gain the favour of the gods, after that and helping out the dwarves in the southern shiverpeaks, they now moved on to an island chain known as the Ring of Fire.
Here the group fought there way through many Mursaat (The Unseen gods of the white mantle) until eventually they met the Lich Lord, here the group discovered the Lich was infact Vizier Khilbron (the Orrian King's advisor)
Khilbron unleashed the dark magics that sunk Orr. The Cataclysm that followed killed thousands, including Vizier, but it had not destroyed him. Instead, he was transformed into an Undead Lich, and his evil continued. As the Lich Lord, he led armies of the undead into Kryta, but his plans extended far beyond.
For his new army was a threat to all existence: the Titans (The charr gods of the time). Using the Scepter of Orr, Khilbron was able to control the Titans, and he led them forth to conquer Tyria.
The Lich Lord's advance was stopped at Hell's Precipice. After a climactic battle, the group was finally able to kill the Lich Lord and round up the last of the titans.
With the death of the Titans the charr were thrown into disarray. Civilization was saved, and many attempted to return to a peaceful existence.

872 AE
Shiro Tagachi, Royal body guard of the Emperor kills the Emperor.
No one but Shiro Tagachi knows what made this sacred imperial bodyguard—the emperor's most trusted servant—turn on his master on the Day of the Jade Wind. Did Shiro plan to sever the unbroken imperial bloodline and crown himself emperor? Was it revenge he sought, for some perceived wrong the emperor had done to Shiro or the Tagachi family? Could Shiro have been seeking some form of power that historians can no longer comprehend?
Whatever his motive, Shiro's act has been literally carved in stone. On the last day of the Harvest Festival, the emperor's favored bodyguard arrived at the Harvest Temple and was waiting when the emperor reached the pinnacle of the temple's tower. Shiro cut down the emperor of Cantha where he knelt on the holy floor, staining it forever with the monarch's blood. Shiro himself was slain only moments later, but his revenge on those who killed him was the most significant event in Canthan history since Kaineng founded the empire. In Shiro's final moments, he drew on all of his ill-gotten power to drain the emperor's very soul away. Seething with magic but mortally wounded, the treacherous bodyguard screamed, and his voice washed over an area hundreds of miles across. Shiro's death wail became the Jade Wind, a cataclysmic wave of energy that turned trees, animals, people, and open water into stone and crystal.

880 AE
The Tengu fight with the Humans of Cantha, a Territorial war over Shing Jae Island, the Tengu are a race of flightless bird creatures with human-like hands.

886 AE
after a petition, they renamed a neighbourhood "Vizunah Square" after Vizu, who was one of the heroes who had slain Shiro after he killed the Emperor.

1071 AE
The Tengu Wars come to an End.
The Tengu Wars were a period of strife between the humans and the Tengu of Cantha. The initial hostilities began in 1390 CC (880 AE) when Canthan farmers began settling Shing Jea Island. At first, it was a simple matter of territory and the fighting was kept to a few skirmishes. War nearly broke out when the Sensali Tengu massacred an entire village and, according to reports at the time, consumed the bodies of those killed. Emperor Hanjai's personal ambassador and an Angchu chieftain managed to create a peace treaty, delaying the onset of war but turning the Sensali tribe against the Angchu.
This peace did not last, as continued settlement of Shing Jea under Emperor Kisu led to the Canthan farmers passing on diseases to the Tengu and their hatchlings. Being forced to kill their young and their brethren, the Tengu sought revenge and thus the Tengu Wars began.
One year after the Tengu Wars had officially ended, the humans and the Tengu held a festival to celebrate the anniversary of the peace accords. This festival was known as the Day of the Tengu.

1072 AE
Shiro unleashes the "Affliction"
After his death, the Oracle of the Mists sought to turn Shiro into an Envoy as punishment, but he refused, and since then they have been attempting to bring him into their fold to ferry the newly dead through the Mists. For two hundred years after his demise, he had been content to lurk at the fringes of the netherworld. However, Shiro eventually accepted the task of becoming an Envoy and somehow learned to use his new power in the creation of an army, unleashing first the Afflicted and later the Shiro'ken upon Cantha, as the former guardsman sought a way to return to life.
The Afflicted are simply living creatures-animal, human, plant-that have had the misfortune to get too close to Shiro’s malevolent spirit. Those left unharmed refer to this “disease” as the Affliction and fear that, if left unchecked, it could become an epidemic. The Affliction is not contagious in this way, but considering the other more obvious dangers the creatures present, steering clear of the Afflicted is wise in most any case.
Anyone or anything could become Afflicted, which lends this so-called plague an even more terrifying aspect than any single, normal disease. The resulting mutations are unpredictable monstrosities with all of the combat strengths the original person or creature possessed, but altered and augmented in terrifying ways by the Affliction.
Once someone or something becomes Afflicted, there is no cure. Killing the Afflicted is the only way to give the tortured soul peace; hesitation or pity will only result in death—yours.
Later in the year 1072 AE
Master Togo summons Mhenlo to the Shing Jea Monastery.

1073
The Kurzick and Luxon nations at war.
Over two hundred years ago, Emperor Angsiyan forged a peace treaty between the Luxons and Kurzicks, ending centuries of conflict. For the first time, Luxons and Kurzicks were at peace. Canthans everywhere celebrated the success of the emperor's negotiations... until Shiro Tagachi assassinated the emperor.
Shiro's assassination was part of a dark ritual that was supposed to grant him extraordinary power. The assassination succeeded, but Shiro was slain before the ritual could be completed. Upon his death, Shiro's soul unleashed the ritual's power, detonating waves of magical energy for miles in every direction. At sea, a violent storm created waves hundreds of feet high, battering Luxon ships into tinder. On land, a deadly wind blasted across plains and through forests, hammering Kuzick caravans along the way. This shockwave nearly killed the land of Cantha, until the storm stopped as suddenly as it began. On that day, the waters of the ocean froze in place and the Echovald Forest fell silent, after tens of thousands of innocents had been slaughtered.
The death of the twenty-sixth emperor changed Cantha forever. The Luxons had made their fortune through maritime trade, but a frozen sea brought their fleets to a standstill. The Kurzicks had survived by hauling goods across the land, until the powerful creatures that once protected the forest turned on those who lived within it. The Luxons and Kurzicks searched for new ways to survive—and they found them. Fixed within the frozen sea, and hidden within the deadly forests, stockpiles of rare amber and jadeite waited for those brave enough to recover them. Desperation led to greed, as Kurzick houses and Luxon clans warred for vast stretches of valuable land.
Both the Luxon and Kurzick cultures had been absorbed by the empire long ago, but the loss of the emperor offered greater opportunities. The Luxons and Kurzicks had been vassals of Cantha, but since their overlord had been slain, both factions saw a chance to seize power. The result was a civil war that would last for over two hundred years. From Amatz Basin to Eredon Terrace, the eastern regions of Cantha became a battleground, and the border between Luxon and Kurzick lands shifted from day to day.
at the time, the benevolent Emperor Kisu ruled over Cantha. The Luxons and Kurzicks remember the bloodshed of the last two centuries, and they still ceaselessly contest for land and power. The emperor cannot stop their continual conflict—in fact, he knows that as long as the two factions fight, neither one will be strong enough to rise up against him. He also knows that as long as they are eternally ready for war, they will be prepared to defend his land against more sinister threats. Luxons and Kurzicks are both still Canthans, after all, eternally watchful for evil in their midst... including malefic forces as dangerous as the infamous Shiro Tagachi.
a Group of heroes including Menhlo and Togo gathered the two clans together to fight Shiro, they struggled to rally them, but eventually (after many many hordes afflicted) made it to the Raisu Palace gates to confront Shiro who is after the Emperor's life to use it for a ritual to make himself mortal again.
Here Togo is slain by Shiro. Togo was the half brother of the emperor and had enough of the royal blood to complete Shiro's ritual, the now Vengeful heroes fought Shiro, eventually Shiro lost his life... again. After his second death, the other Envoys took Shiro's soul to the worst prison in the afterlife

1077 AE
Minister Reiko Murakami officially establishes the Ministry of Purity. This new Ministry sweeps the land of Cantha to cleanse the rest of the Affliction and attempt to bring peace back to the war-torn lands.

29 AE
Primeval Kings spread their rule into Vabbi and the Desolation, and begin to bury their dead rulers in tombs in the Crystal Desert.

452 AE
Scarab Plague sweeps through Elona.
The Scarab Plague was an uncontrollable disease that quickly spread to all reaches of Elona in 452 to 456 AE. It was because of the plague that the first dynasty of Elona, the Primeval Dynasty, fell and during the time of the Scarab Plague Elona was without a dynasty. The plague originated in Fahranur and led to the exodus of Istan from their island home for sixty-eight years (sixty-four years longer than the plague itself). According to records, the first new settlements on Istan had been established in 520 AE
456 AE
The Scarab Plague ends, Admun Kolos takes the throne, founding the Great Dynasty.
520 AE
First new settlements in the Istan Islands.

583 AE
The Pretender Wars were a series of Elonian wars that took place shortly after the end of the Great Dynasty (583 AE) and lasted until 640 AE. During the war, various groups, all either claiming to be the rightful heir(s) to the Primeval Kings or warlords seeking power, fought in Elona's bloodiest wars.
Due to the Pretender Wars, the time period became known as the Shattered Dynasty Era.
640 AE
Last of the Shattered Dynasties collapse. Elona emerges as three allied provinces--Kourna, Istan, and Vabbi.

757 AE
Palawa Joko builds his Bone Palace in the Desolation. The Desolation is situated on the northwestern portion of Elona, connected to the Crystal Desert. Palawa Joko becomes the undead ruler of this Desolation.

862 AE
Turai Ossa launches an attack on Palawa Joko known as the Battle of Jahai. After 100 days of bloody battle, Turai Ossa and his elite troops defeated Joko's undead forces of grey giants and undead centaurs. Yet, despite attempts made with magic, blade, and even other means, Palawa Joko could not be killed. Turai Ossa's elite forces chained him by magic and bound him deep in the earth. Thus the undead lord's defeat was complete and Palawa Joko sealed away forever in a location kept secret by the Order of Whispers.
899 AE
the Great Fortress of Jahai established where the battle took place.

1075 AE
Like the Golden Sun, the gods watch over Elona, but in the shadows, enemies of the heavens hide from ceaseless scrutiny. Outside the world we know, malefic forces watch and wait, scheming of ways to manifest in the realm of flesh. Their methods range from the subtle to the shocking: whispers in the minds of the troubled, plagues creeping across the corrupted countryside, innocents transformed into ravenous abominations, and stranger creations. Civilizations arise to defend humanity against this evil but sometimes, civilization fails.
Now Elona is troubled by kindred horrors. Civilized lands recognize and revere five gods, but heretics speak of a fallen god. A thousand years ago, these heretics’ spiritual ancestors, the Margonites, fought an epic battle on the shallow sea north of Elona. The carnage that resulted created a vast wasteland—the realm now known as the Crystal Desert. Empowered by the blessings of their dark deity, the Margonites waged war against the followers of all other gods—smashing temples, desecrating shrines, and butchering all rivals. Despite the power granted by horrific transformations, their army was annihilated, their false god exiled to a realm of torment.
Now heretics see signs that their fallen god may be at work in the world again. His name has been eradicated from all history, burnished from all monuments, condemned as blasphemy—yet still, the servants of the unholy watch and wait. With sharpened blades and practiced spells, his followers await the return of their forgotten and forsaken deity. Fervently, they believe that he will return, just as night follows day. Working the will of a patient and potent force of evil in the world, they await the onset of Nightfall.
The Sunspears of Istan, an organization Established to defend Elona against all threats, led by Spearmarshal Kormir fight back against this threat of Nightfall, they discover Warmshal Varesh of Kourna, descendant of Turai Ossa is attempting to summon the falled god Abaddon into the realm of the living, thus bringing nightfall with it. The Sunspears wage war against Kourna but are ultimately defeated and shattered, Their spearmarshal captured, with no support, no base of operations and no troops a small group of heroes pull everything back together, rescue Kormir (now blinded by the demons of Abaddon) and march north to assault Varesh directly. There was a problem, unfortunately the Desolation lay in the midst of their path, in order to cross it the Heroes freed Palawa Joko, who in return showed them the way.
Once the heroes reach Varesh, she is nearly consumed with Abaddon's corruption, they kill Varesh along with many Margonites and make their way into the realm of torment, where Abaddon was imprisoned by the other gods. After many grueling fights the heroes face of against Abaddon's greatest generals, the Lich and Shiro Tagachi, who'm were both imprisoned in the realm of torment also. They quickly defeat the two gain the blessing of the five true gods to go and fight Abaddon himself.
Abaddon, God of Secrets and Water, was once known as one of the six Gods of Tyria. He was the god who is said to have distributed the gift of magic; however, he gave it out too freely and wars between the races soon began. Because of the wars the other five gods limited the use of magic through the creation of the bloodstones, but Abaddon disagreed. Angered, Abaddon used his Margonite army to start a war against the other five gods and attacked the place known as Gates of Heaven. Although he was capable of overpowering two gods on his own, he was defeated at the place now known as the Mouth of Torment and was imprisoned in the Realm of Torment, chained and weakened. It was because of this war that the gods left Tyria.
The heroes fight and Defeat Abaddon, Kormir aided in the death of Abaddon in the Realm of Torment. However, Abaddon's death made his powers go rampant and threatened to destroy the area. To prevent this, Kormir jumped into the center of the power and absorbed it, becoming the new God of Knowledge in the process.

Their efforts gained the support of the Shining Blade, a rebel faction who oppose the White Mantle's rule. The White Mantle lost their leadership and most of their gods, loosening their grip over Kryta.
Since then, Kryta had been plunged into a civil war. Although the conflict is mainly between the Shining Blade and White Mantle, there are various other warlords who have been attempting to seize control themselves.
After many heroes were gathered the Shining Blade took control of Lion's Arch, the White Mantle did not like that one bit, they decided to use their remaining forces and the power of the Unseen Gods that were still alive to assault the city.

The Foefire is the spell that ended the last battle of Ascalon City. According to human legends, in 1090 AE, when the charr Legions breached the city limits, the human soldiers were pushed back to the highest tower in the city. It is said that there, King Adelbern of Ascalon clashed personally with the Imperator of the Flame Legion, whose name has since been purged from the records of the charr. The legend states that when King Adelbern's ancient Orrian sword, Magdaer, struck the Claw of the Khan-Ur, the spark from the clash started a sword-shaped fire which engulfed first the tower, and then the acting capital of Ascalon in a brilliant white flame, killing the invading charr and resurrecting the fallen Ascalon Army into spectral undeath, where they remain to this day, vigilant against intruders human and charr alike. The only known human survivors were those stationed at Ebonhawke, far outside the range of the Foefire. According to legend, if either Magdaer or its twin, Sohothin are returned to Ascalon City in the hands of the rightful king of Ascalon, then the ghosts will be put to rest.

1105 AE

Supported by her father, the Imperator of the Blood Legion, she defeated Ironstrike and won rights for the female charr. When the Flame Legion went to battle with the other charr legions on the Plains of Golghein, they were outnumbered by double the forces due to the female troops. After the Flame Legion's surrender, the Imperator of the Flame Legion assassinated Scorchrazor with a poisoned dagger for the humiliation she had brought upon him.
She died mouthing the words, "At least, I die knowing my sisters are free."
